Emir meets Mexican president; several pacts signed to boost ties

HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto  witness the signing of an agreement between Qatar and Mexico yesterday.

Qatar and Mexico signed a raft of memoranda of understanding and agreements following a session of official talks chaired by HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto at the Presidential Palace in the Mexican capital, Mexico City, yesterday.
The two sides discussed aspects of boosting bilateral relations and ways of developing them in all fields, particularly in economy and investment sectors.
Discussions also dealt with a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest and the latest developments in the Middle East.
The session of talks was attended by the members of the official delegation accompanying the Emir and Mexican ministers and senior officials.
Following the talks, the Emir and the Mexican president witnessed the signing of a number of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between the two countries, including an MoU between Qatar Central Bank and the Bank of Mexico, which aims to develop and strengthen bilateral relations in the field of legal competence, an MoU between Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade, investment and technology that aims to promote trade and economic co-operation between the companies, a memorandum of understanding for co-operation in the youth sector between Qatar’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, and Mexican Youth Institute, which aims to develop bilateral relations and strengthen co-operation in the field of youth through organising joint activities.
The Emir and the Mexican president also witnessed the signing of an air services agreement between Qatar and Mexico, which aims to introduce direct flights between the two countries as well as the Convention on Technical Co-operation between Qatar and Mexico, which aims to develop co-operation in economic, trade and technical fields, industry, mining, energy, agriculture, telecommunications, transportation, construction, labour, tourism, culture, education, science and technology, and others.
The Emir and the Mexican president held a meeting ahead of the talks session to review the bilateral relations between the two countries and ways of enhancing them.
The Emir was accorded an official welcoming ceremony upon his arrival at the Presidential Palace.
Earlier on arrival at Mexico International Airport on Monday evening, the Emir and his accompanying delegation were welcomed by Mexico’s Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos de Icaza, Qatar’s ambassador to Mexico Dr Ahmad Abdullah al-Kuwari, Mexico’s ambassador to Qatar Francisco Javier Niembro Cibrian, several heads of Arab diplomatic missions accredited to Mexico and staff members of Qatar’s embassy.  
The Emir is in Mexico on a two-day visit.
Bilateral relations between Qatar and Mexico were established on June 30, 1975, and mutual embassies opened last year.
The Emir arrived in Mexico from Cuba.
Upon his departure from Cuba on Monday after a two-day official visit the Emir and the accompanying delegation were seen off at Havana Jose Marti International Airport by Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra, Qatar’s ambassador to Cuba Rashed Mirza al-Mulla and members of the embassy staff.
HH the Emir sent a cable to the Cuban president Raul Castro, expressing his gratitude and appreciation for the hospitality that he and the accompanying delegation received.
