German driver Sebastian Vettel has declared himself pleased with his debut season in Ferrari as the Formula One campaign comes to a close with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.
“The season has exceeded our expectations, we had a fantastic year, just phenomenal,” Vettel said at a press conference yesterday.
Vettel, a four-time world champion with Red Bull, is guaranteed to finish third in the standings behind Mercedes pair Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
The 28-year-old has finished on the podium 13 times so far, winning three races for Ferrari - a marked improvement for the Italian garage after a disastrous 2014 failed to bring a single victory.
“We want to finish the season on a high note,” Vettel added.
Vettel is the only driver outside of Mercedes to win this season with a solid base to build on, he is targeting an even more competitive 2016.
“It cannot be the goal to get closer to Mercedes,” he said. “We want to be at the front.
“I believe that the success (this season) has helped speed up the process and hopefully will make us even stronger for next year.”
Returning to Abu Dhabi brings back happy memories for Vettel who won his first world title here in a thrilling 2010 race and in 2012 produced a record climb from 24th on the grid to finish third.
