The initiative involved the distribution of first-aid kits.
Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), in celebration of World First Aid Day, has held a community health awareness and first-aid lecture for 30 elderly people and the staff of Qatar Foundation for Elderly People Care (Ihsan).
The lecture involved an introduction to QRCS’s mission and community services and first aid as a life-saving intervention. It gave an overview of everyday life injuries such as fainting, fracture, wounds, nosebleed, burn, falling from high places, etc.
There was a practical illustration using a CPR manikin and a volunteer to show how to deal with the above cases.
The instructors explained the steps of calling the ambulance, providing information such as one’s address calmly, describing the situation accurately and stabilising the case until the arrival of medics.
The attendees received important tips such as regular medical checkup, being careful to maintain balance and avoid falling and rupture, Vitamin D tests and reading of medicine side effects.
Brainstorming and QA techniques were used to engage the audience. In the end, first-aid kits were distributed to the participants.
Mohamed al-Nesf, director of health services at Ihsan, thanked QRCS for its contributions to the society and especially the elderly, as evident in the relations with his foundation.
Dr Manar al-Ghamrawi, socio-psychological consultant at Ihsan, said: “Their (QRCS’s) support of elderly people helps protect them against the feelings of depression and uselessness. Such courses and lectures develop elderly people mentally and emotionally and motivate them to help themselves and others.”
