Blackhawks shock Ducks with 3-2 overtime victory

Hosting the Chicago Blackhawks for their annual Black Friday matinee has become a painful exercise for the Ducks.
Artem Anisimov scored at 1:53 of overtime after the Blackhawks rallied for two goals late in regulation and the defending Stanley Cup champions pulled off a stunning 3-2 victory at Honda Center.
Marian Hossa and Duncan Keith scored goals in the final 1:41 of regulation to forge a tie, stunning the Ducks faithful and delighting the many red-clad Blackhawks fans among the sellout crowd of 17,174.
John Gibson had appeared to be on his way to his third career shutout and Andrew Cogliano and Chris Stewart supported the goalie with goals. But these are the Blackhawks and they never go down easily, as the Ducks learned all too well in last spring’s Western Conference finals. With Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf called for a tripping penalty on Chicago’s Andrew Shaw, Hossa took advantage as he put a slap shot through traffic past Gibson after the Blackhawks pulled goalie Corey Crawford for a 6-on-4 advantage.
Then with Crawford pulled again for an extra attacker, Keith hurt the Ducks once again as he beat Gibson on his stick side with 26.6 seconds left. It was Keith who was dominant on defense in the Blackhawks’ seven-game series victory on the way to being named the most valuable player of the playoffs.
Anisimov applied the finishing touch in the 3-on-3 overtime session as he got a pass from Seabrook and put the puck by Gibson. The Ducks (8-11-5) have lost two straight despite Gibson’s 29 saves and fine work over the first 57-plus minutes. It was Gibson’s second straight start and third appearance in goal after being called up from the American Hockey League on Tuesday. The third-year goalie has been with the San Diego Gulls throughout the season but was needed when Frederik Andersen came down with the flu.
With Andersen watching from the press box and Anton Khudobin on the bench as a backup, Gibson made his case to remain in Anaheim and give the Ducks an interesting decision on their goaltending.
It was the first time the Blackhawks were back at the arena since winning Game 7 of the Western Conference finals. The Ducks came out slowly that night, fell behind 2-0 and never recovered.
The Ducks (9-11-4) sought to write a new narrative this time out and Cogliano put it in ink just 62 seconds into the contest. The speedy winger got sprung on a breakaway off plays by Cam Fowler and Carl Hagelin before beating Crawford for a quick 1-0 lead.
Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau kept center Ryan Kesler on Jonathan Toews throughout after being criticized for putting Ryan Getzlaf on the Blackhawks’ captain last spring. Toews scored the first two goals in that Game 7 win but was shut down Friday.
Kesler frustrated Toews enough that the two were willing to engage in a fight, with Kesler willing to oblige by putting his stick and gloves down. The two longtime on-ice rivals were kept from a scrap by the two linesmen, but Kesler also had an impact at the offensive end.
Near the midpoint of the second, Kesler got the puck in the Chicago zone but was met by Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook. Kesler took the hit and gave Hampus Lindholm a pass, and the defenseman then gave it to Stewart.
Stewart would finish the scoring play with his fourth goal of the season.
