An exhibition featuring the works of Qatari artist Fatma al-Shebani has opened at Katara – the Cultural Village.

The opening of the Batoula Exhibition, “6D”, was attended by Ahmad al-Sayed, deputy general manager (operations) at Katara, US ambassador Dana Shell Smith and several Qatari and foreign artists.

“Katara doesn’t hesitate to support Qatari artists and also encourages them to present their ideas within their artistic vision. This will enrich the local artistic landscape and help reach the international arena,” al-Sayed said.

The exhibition presents two models of Batoula and Bukhnuq, created by the artist using different materials.

Al-Shebani noted that the Bukhnuq is a veil worn by girls before marriage. After marriage, women would wear the Batoula. These two are an integral part of women’s attire in the GCC.

The exhibition presents a picture of the Qatari heritage regarding elements of women’s fashion, such as Batoula and Bukhnuq, al-Sayed said. These two fashion items have been presented in an artistic and eye-catching manner at the exhibition.

“After holding different exhibitions on 4D and 5D, my thoughts revolved around my experience since the seventies. The 6D is a time travel and vertical distance. Through the flashback technique, I intended to introduce a contemporary, creative and artistic vision through Batoula and Bukhnuq,” the artist explained.

Al-Shebani thanked Katara for its efforts in hosting the exhibition. “Katara is a cultural hub that has been always a destination for empowering creativity,” she added.

Impressed with the works on display, the US envoy said the exhibition unveils forms of Qatari tradition, women’s attire and its social and cultural implications. She also lauded the role of Katara in enriching the cultural scenario.

Al-Shebani has participated in art exhibitions in places such as London, Abu Dhabi, Paris and Germany.
