Qatar University (QU) basketball team emerged winners in the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) Basketball Championship last Saturday. The team beat Texas A&M University in Qatar (TAMUQ) 31-28 in the final that was attended by a QU contingent including president Dr Hassan al-Derham, associate vice president for Student Life & Services Abdulla al-Yafei, officials and students.
Commenting on the team’s success, Dr al-Derham said: “Our students were empowered by persistence and ambition and demonstrated that they are competent to face challenges. QU continues to support its students’ participation in non-academic activities to enrich their campus experience.”
Al-Yafei congratulated the students, and noted that the presence of QU president gave the team added impetus to give their all and win the championship.
Team coach Ahmed Oueslati said: “I am very proud of the team’s success. The players surprised us all with different and clever techniques from beginning to end of the match. We plan to continue participating in future regional and international competitions.”
Players Ahmed Hamed and Mohamed al-Batal highlighted the team’s belief in their ability, persistence, hard work, consistent training and strong team spirit as reasons behind their winning the championship.
