Three local farm produce markets doing brisk sales

The three local farm produce markets located in different parts of the country have sold around 321 tonnes of vegetables and 215 tonnes of fresh fruits since their opening in November.
The launch of the fourth season of the local farm produce markets last month saw the participation of 72 farms, with five more set to join next week.
The markets, run by the Ministry of Environment (MoE), are located in the Al Mazrouah, Al Khor-Al Dhakira and Al Wakrah yards. The MoE has been keen to prolong the local agriculture season by having an early start to the farm produce markets season.
In the first week of November, 23 types of vegetables were on display for sale, which increased to 32 in the second week and 39 in the week after that. Currently, 46 types of locally produced vegetables are available in the three yards.
Of the total fruits sold, the Al Wakrah yard accounted for 106 tonnes, Al Mazrouah 73 tonnes and Al Khor-Al Dhakira 36 tonnes.
Besides vegetables and fruits, the yards also sell fish, poultry and livestock.
Many people have turned up to buy fish at the yards, which recorded sales of 14.5 tonnes in the first 10 days of November. In terms of poultry, 2,548 domestic birds were sold last month across the three yards.
Similarly, 540 heads of sheep and goats were sold in November at Al Mazrouah yard.
The yards are open to the public during weekends from 7am to 5pm.
