A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced in absentia an Indian expatriate to three years in jail for counterfeiting a university degree indicating that he got a BSC degree from Calicut University in 2006.
Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday that the court also ordered the deportation of the man after serving his sentence when arrested. The defendant used an official sticker taken from another document and put it on the counterfeited certificate. Then, he used a pen to trace on the original signatures and used a counterfeited stamp of the Qatari Embassy in Mumbai, India.
Later, he submitted the counterfeited certificate to the attestation department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Doha. The attestation employee doubted the authenticity of the document and sent it to the forensic labs which confirmed the fraud.
The court established that the defendant agreed with an unidentified person to do the counterfeiting for him in exchange for 20,000 Indian rupees, to improve his position at his job, the daily added.

Motorist ordered to pay motorcyclist QR34,000

A Doha Criminal Court has ordered an Arab motorist to pay QR34,000, in collaboration with the insurance company concerned, to a motorcyclist who was hit and injured.
The man was also fined QR3,000 for hitting the motorcyclist and causing a fracture in his leg, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday.
The court slapped a fine of QR3,000 on the motorcyclist as well for wrong overtaking on the road. The investigations indicated that the motorist was confused with the road layout and tried to take an illegal shortcut.

Jail for stealing LPG cyclinder

A Sri Lankan expatriate has been sentenced to a year in jail followed by deportation for stealing LPG cylinders and selling them, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday.
He was convicted of stealing the cylinders from different camps in the Umm Salal area and threatening the guard with a knife.
His accomplice compatriot was sentenced to six months in jail, followed by deportation, for buying the stolen cylinders and some other things.
The first convict was caught while trying to steal some movable things from a camp at Umm Salal area.
When questioned by the guard, he claimed that his employer sent him to collect some materials from the farm.
The guard asked him to wait until he contacted the employer, but the convict tried to escape in vehicle. When the guard followed him, the convict threatened him with a knife.  
After sometime, the convict was caught with the stolen articles in his vehicle. He also led police to his accomplice, the daily added.
