Expert medical educators from around the world gathered at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) to deliver a workshop to the faculty on the latest developments in educational techniques and strategies.
The two-day faculty development workshop brought experts from Qatar, the US, the UAE, Oman and Lebanon together in Doha to give lectures and lead individual workshops designed to further the professional development of local and regional healthcare professionals by equipping them with the latest knowledge and skills related to innovations in medical education.
More than 70 healthcare professionals attended to explore topics that included strategies for remediating struggling learners, maintaining professionalism in the era of social media, and assessment of ‘entrustable professional activities (EPAs)’, which are key skills that every medical school graduate has to master in order to begin their next stage of training.
The workshop, which had the theme ‘New Horizons in Medical Education’, featured keynote speeches by Dr Stephanie Call, associate chair of education and director, Internal Medicine Residency at Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr G Dodd Denton, assistant deputy head of School at the Ochsner Clinical School/University of Queensland and Dr Dora Stadler, assistant dean of Continuing Professional Development at WCM-Q.
Dr Thurayya Arayssi, associate dean for Continuing Professional Development at WCM-Q, said: “This workshop has provided a great opportunity for our immensely talented faculty at WCM-Q to discover some of the most important new pedagogical innovations in medical education, which is extremely beneficial both for themselves and their students. Based in Virginia, AAIM is a consortium of five academic medical organisations that collectively represent departments of internal medicine at medical schools and teaching hospitals across the United States and Canada. The organisation facilitates the sharing of expertise that teaching institutions can draw upon to support their own efforts to achieve the very highest educational standards.
In May 2015, WCM-Q’s division of Continuing Professional Development signed a memorandum of understanding with AAIM to help faculty at the college incorporate the very latest advances in student and medical resident education into their skill sets. This workshop marks the first event hosted jointly by WCM-Q and AAIM.
