Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC) has celebrated the inauguration of its new stockpile and floating jetties, Yamal 1 and Yamal 2, at a ceremony held on site in Ras Laffan Industrial City under the patronage of HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani.
QPMC’s Ras Laffan floating jetties, which have been set up to supply primary materials, are aimed at increasing the country’s strategic stockpile to 9mn tonnes per year, the company said in a release.
Dignitaries in attendance at the ceremony included QPMC chairman Abdulaziz al-Ansari; QPMC CEO Eisa al-Hammadi and a number of ministers, QPMC board members and senior officials representing Qatar Petroleum, Ras Laffan Industrial City, QPMC and Nakilat, the project’s main contractor.
The two floating docks, which are part of the completed first phase of the project, can each accommodate four barges, with an additional dock that can accommodate an extra marpol jetty (totalling up to five barges) with a handling capacity of 12,000 tonnes each and a total port receiving capacity of 9mn tonnes a year.
The port operates round the clock and also boasts of a gabbro storage area of 1,800,000 sq m.
Serving as an offloading point for aggregates, the jetties will be in close proximity to the stockpile located in the industrial city within a distance of 28km
Al-Ansari said the project would help fulfil the programme outlined by the country’s leadership to implement a number of major infrastructure and construction plans and develop transportation networks.
“Therefore, once this new facility boasting of four floating jetties, including the now serviceable Yamal 1 and 2, and the 1,800,000sqm stockyard are fully operational in late 2016, the port’s capacity will increase gradually in tandem with the government’s need for material supply in the northern areas of the country as a vital construction hub,” he explained.
Al-Hammadi said: “The floating jetties were delivered within the deadline and the budget allocated while complying fully with safety and security standards.”
QPMC is scheduled next to inaugurate its conveyor belt project and cement silos by late 2016. This is expected to significantly reduce truck loading time and improve the cost efficiency and handling capacity of the Mesaieed port, the statement notes.
At the end of the ceremony, al-Ansari presented Sheikh Abdullah with a souvenir.
