Muntazah fire toll rises to three as father dies

Doha

The toll in the Muntazah fire has risen to three with the death of Rafael Paule.

He was pronounced dead late on Saturday. The other two victims are Rafael's wife Chona Rion Pingul and their daughter Micaela.

Last week, a fire broke out in the house where Rafael's family, from the Philippines, was staying in the Muntazah area. Chona died on the same day while Rafael and Micaela were admitted to hospital in critical condition.

The couple's son Rafael Lorenzo, who was also admitted to hospital after the fire, was discharged the next day while his elder sister was away in the Philippines when the incident took place.

Rafael had been "brain dead" and put on ventilator support since being admitted to the hospital. Gulf Times reported Micaela's death on Saturday.

Rafael, who was an active member of the Filipino Catholic community at the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Rosary, had been working with Hamad Medical Corporation since 1999 while Chona was a contract analyst with Qatar Shell since 2008.

The Philippine ambassador Wilfredo Santos told Gulf Times on Sunday that the embassy was still awaiting the official results of the investigation of Qatari authorities. "The embassy is always ready to provide any consular assistance that is necessary," he added.
