QU team wins second place in contest

Qatar University (QU) has won the second place in the “Most Civically-Engaged University Campus” competition held recently in Egypt.
The QU team competed against four university teams from the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region in the event organised by Ma’an Arab University Alliance for Civic Engagement.
Representing QU were civic engagement focal point and Core Curriculum Programme (CCP) and Foundation Programme director Dr Maha al-Hendawi, College of Pharmacy (CPH) associate dean for academic affairs Dr Mohamed Issam Diab, CCP curriculum and instruction co-ordinator Dr Abdelhamid Ahmed, Student Affairs Department community service specialist Majd al-Shibli, and CPH student Nurhan El-Shafey.
Their presentation showcased the wide range of academic and extracurricular activities on and off campus with regard to civic engagement, such as the service learning component in the “UNIV 100 course” -- a core curriculum course for first-year students -- Al Bairaq Project, Diabetes Awareness Week, Breast Cancer Awareness outreach activities, and many others.
They also presented a short video on community service activities conducted by QU students, faculty and students from the various colleges and departments.
Congratulating the team, QU vice-president and chief academic officer Dr Mazen Hasna stated that as the country’s prominent national institution, QU continues to be a key partner in advancing a culture of civic responsibility, volunteerism and student leadership within Qatar.
QU vice president for student affairs Dr Khalid Mohamed al-Khanji said: “This achievement demonstrates QU’s commitment to ensuring an enriching environment for encouraging academic excellence, volunteerism, civic responsibility and leadership.”
