Dubai: India’s Rohan Bopanna won his singles as well as doubles match as Indian Aces extended their domination in the International Premier Tennis League, winning the contest against Philippine Marvericks comfortably 30-17 in Dubai yesterday.
In a surprise move, Bopanna was fielded in the legends singles and he came out all gun blazing by blanking American James Blake 6-0. Agnieszka Radwanska was her usual fighting self as she edged Ajla Tomlajanovic 6-4 to help Indian Aces consolidate lead.
The defending champions changed their mixed doubles pairing as Sania Mirza combined with Ivan Dodig instead of Bopanna and they prevailed 6-4 against Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Jarmila Gajdosova.
Bopanna came back to action for the men’s doubles with Dodig and they faced stiff resistance from Roger-Vasselin and Treat Huey before wining via shoot out. The Indian team won the shootout 7-2.
The defending champions had sealed the tie and the men’s singles was rendered inconsequential.
But Bernad Tomic closed the contest for the Indian team on a winning note with a 6-4 victory over big-serving Ivo Karlovic.
In a late match, Roger Federer’s single-set shootout with Andy Murray was the highlight on the second day of the Dubai leg at Dubai Tennis Stadium.
The Swiss world number three will be representing hometown hopes the OBI UAE Royals when he takes to Centre Court for only the second time since winning a record seventh Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship crown back in late February. He played in the men’s singles and men’s doubles alongside Croatian Marin Cilic on Monday night.
Federer has played his British opponent - a marquee player for the OUE Singapore Slammers - on 25 occasions on the ATP World Tour and he has marginally had the better of their head-to-head record so far; Federer winning 14 matches (56 per cent) to Murray’s 11 (44 per cent).
Federer’s UAE Royals team-mates include: Cilic, Goran Ivanisevic, Kristina Mladenovic and doubles specialist Daniel Nestor. Murray meanwhile will join forces with the likes of Belinda Bencic, Dustin Brown, Nick Kyrgios, Marcelo Melo, Carlos Moya and Karolina Pliskova among the Slammers contingent.
