The Ministry of Transport has announced that the Hamad Port’s early operations will start on Dec 24 for limited types of ships and cargoes.
Once fully operational, the Hamad Port’s capacity will be 6mn containers a year. It will be connected with the other GCC countries through road, sea and rail networks.
The Hamad Port will be able to handle 1.7mn tonnes of general goods, 1mn tonnes of food grains and 500,000 vehicles. There will also be a general cargo terminal, a multi-use terminal, an offshore supply base, a coast guard facility, and a port marine unit.
The Hamad Port will have a centralised customs area, a port administrative district, vessels’ inspecting platform, 110m control tower, multiple maritime facilities, and other facilities such as mosque, stocks.
The Hamad Port is poised to make Qatar a maritime gateway for global trade, in order to achieve the pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030. The Hamad Port will also support economic diversification and improve the region’s competitiveness by transforming Qatar into a regional sea trading hub.
