LeGarrette Blount, the top rusher for the reigning Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, will miss the remainder of the National Football League season with a hip injury, reports said Tuesday.
Radio station WEEI and ESPN said the injury Blount suffered in the second quarter of a 27-6 victory over the Houston Texans will sideline him for the final month of the campaign and the playoffs.
Blount leads the Patriots rushers with 703 yards and four touchdowns.
Brandon Bolden replaced Blount against the Texans and finished with 51 yards on 16 carries, but Blount has most of the Patriots’ carries this season and his absence could dim the support for star quarterback Tom Brady.
The Patriots signed former Denver Broncos running back Montee Ball to their practice squad. During his first two NFL seasons with the Broncos, he rushed for 731 yards and five touchdown on 175 carries over 21 games.
At 11-2, the Patriots have clinched the AFC East division crown and are fighting Denver and the Cincinnati Bengals for a first-round playoff bye.
