Palestinian driver shot dead after he tried to ram soldiers

A Palestinian protester hurls a rock at Israeli security forces during clashes near Shejaiya, an eastern district of Gaza City along the border with Israel, on Friday.

Israeli soldiers shot dead a Palestinian who tried to ram them with a car in the occupied West Bank on Friday, the army said, and medics said 10 Palestinians were wounded in other clashes.

A campaign of stabbings, shootings and car-rammings by Palestinians has killed 19 Israelis and a US citizen since October. Israeli forces or armed civilians have killed at least 115 Palestinians, 69 of whom authorities described as assailants.

The army said a motorist tried to run over Israeli soldiers during a violent demonstration by Palestinians near the West Bank town of Silwad.

An Israeli police spokeswoman said the Palestinian had a knife with him in the car.

Another Palestinian was shot and wounded during a similar car-ramming attempt at the West Bank checkpoint of Qalandia, the police spokeswoman said, adding that he had received medical treatment.

In the West Bank city of Ramallah, medics said a Palestinian was wounded by Israeli army gunfire during a violent protest. In the Gaza Strip, Palestinians massed near the fenced-off border with Israel, throwing rocks at Israeli troops beyond, and army gunfire wounded eight of the demonstrators, medics said.

The surge in violence has been partly fuelled by Palestinian frustration over the collapse of US-sponsored peace talks in 2014, the growth of Jewish settlements on land they seek for a future state and Islamist calls for the destruction of Israel.

Palestinians are also angry over stepped-up Jewish visits to Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound.
