A large number of visitors participated in the Qatar National Day (QND) programmes at Katara —the Cultural Village yesterday.
The celebrations featuring more than 48 events conclude today.
Katara is collaborating with different institutions, authorities and associations in Qatar to host the celebrations.
The military parade by the 50-member Emiri Guard musical band at the esplanade was greeted by hundreds of well-wishers and served as one of the key attractions.
“I am really pleased to honour Qatari musicians who gave homage to their homeland,” said Katara general manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti.
The band led the musical programme which reflected patriotic fervour, and they also received loud applause from the crowd at the amphitheatre.
Katara also honoured three band members who composed the music for the renowned Qatari traditional song, “My Beloved Qatar.” These include lyricist Abdullah Abdul Karim al-Hamadi, musician Abdulaziz Naser al-Obaidan and singer Mohamed al-Saai.
Highlighting the rich tradition, a ceremonial military reception was also given to student sailors at the Qatar Leadership Academy.
“I am really very proud to witness the achievement of our students who have made these initiatives to revive our heritage that stresses the sense of belonging of our identity and illustrate their leadership skills,” said Brigadier General Ali Ahmad al-Kuwari, director at Qatar Leadership Academy.
The ‘temporary cultural village’ at Katara for the QND celebration attracted a large number of visitors including those from expatriate communities.
The shops showcased the country’s rich culture and heritage, offering ethnic pieces of electronics equipment, leather goods, tele-printers, cameras and many items which link visitors to “the glorious past of Qatar.” Other stalls sold hand-woven shawls and caps.
The eateries at the village served traditional Qatari cuisine and dishes that are popular in different parts of the world.
Like in the previous years, Katara has given priority to children who want to perform in various events.
Many visitors also expressed their loyalty and gratitude to Qatar by writing their greetings on the ‘Loyalty Book’ set up at the beach-front of Katara.
Other events included horseback tours at the esplanade, international, national musical shows and para-jumping show by the Qatari Armed Forces.
