Al Thumama area gets new electricity sub-station

A new sub-station supported by extra high voltage underground cables has replaced the 220/132kv over head lines (OHL) that served Al Thumama area, according to a communique from the Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation.
The project comprised 13 contracts, executed at nearly QR 788m.
The new Al Thumama substation serves the new fast developing residential area at Al Thumama by transferring bulk power from 609 MW Ras Abu Fontas B and 2,000 MW Messaieed Power Generation Plants.
The vital substation also connects to Doha South Super as well, which is the interconnection point of the GCC grid.
The new extra high voltage cables buried underground cover more than 54 kilometres of the areas previously covered by the OHLs linked to Ras Abu Fontas A, Ras Abu Fontas B, Al Wukair Super and Al Wakra sub-stations.
Kahramaa has said the project was completed before the target deadline as the OHL replacement with underground cables was essential to complete the basic infrastructure projects of Ashghal and Qatar Rail within the area.
It said the main challenge of the project was to dismantle those OHLs that were installed several years years ago and link the connected network substations in a tight deadline to ensure continual power supply to the area’s customers, with no interruptions.
The newly implemented project covered 220kv cable installations for a total length of 183km and 132kv cable installations for nearly 58km, along with the  dismantling of 54km of over-head lines.
The combined work hours exceeded 748,147  man hours, with no lost time due to injury (LTI).
