Woodson, Mack, Reece selected to Pro Bowl

Raiders retiring legend Charles Woodson, rising star defensive end Khalil Mack and fullback Marcel Reece were named to the Pro Bowl on Tuesday.
It’s the first time in four years the Raiders will send multiple players to the NFL’s annual All-Star game, which will be played Jan. 31 in Honolulu.
The Raiders could end up with additional selections. Quarterback Derek Carr, wide receiver Amari Cooper and running back Latavius Murray were all named alternates and could be added to the team as players drop out.
Reece has been the team’s lone selection the past three years.
The three selections are the Raiders most since sending four in 2011, although three of those were special teamers (kicker Sebastian Janikowski, punter Shane Lechler and long snapper Jon Condo). The Raiders haven’t had this many position players since sending five in 2002.
It’s Woodson’s ninth career selection and the Jan. 31 game in Honolulu will be the last action of his 18-year NFL career. He announced Monday that he will retire at the end of the season.
Woodson appeared on the NFL Network’s broadcast of the Pro Bowl announcement and pushed for former Raiders’ teammate Jerry Rice to draft him. The is the third year of the NFL’s conference-free format in which two captains draft the teams, and Rice and Michael Irvin will serve as those captains for a second straight year.
“Team Jerry, pick me up,” Woodson said. “If Jerry Rice asks me to return a punt or play receiver, I’m going to say, ‘Jerry, thank you. I’ve been waiting on somebody to ask me to do that. I appreciate it and I accept.’ “
This is Woodson’s first selection since 2011 while with Green Bay. He made four straight Pro Bowls with the Raiders from his rookie year in 1998 through 2001, then had a seven-year gap before making it four straight times with the Packers from 2008-11. He acknowledged recently that making another Pro Bowl was an accomplishment he would relish.
“I’m a player that people considered to be done a few years ago,” Woodson said recently. “So to be in year 18 and to have that possibility of making a Pro Bowl is pretty big. You play for those, not necessarily, but when you go out and work hard, you kind of are.”
Mack, the Raiders’ second-year star and the NFL’s sack leader with 15, makes the Pro Bowl for the first time and has the look of a player who could be a perennial contender. He has 62 tackles, two forced fumbles and is one sack away from the Raiders’ single-season franchise record. Reece makes the team for the fourth straight year. He has 28 catches for 226 yards and three touchdowns this season and earned the nod at a position that’s been phased out of the NFL in recent years.
Cooper, who on Sunday became the first Raiders receiver in 10 years to top 1,000 yards, finished seventh in the fan voting. He ranks 13th in the league with 1,040 receiving yards, but doesn’t think he’s earned a spot yet.
“I just don’t feel like I’ve done enough, and I feel like a lot of other receivers have played really well this year,” Cooper said.
Carr, sixth in fan voting, is 10th in the NFL with 3,589 passing yards and sixth with 30 touchdown passes. Murray is the AFC’s leading rusher and fifth in the NFL with 956 yards.
