Los Angeles Clippers superstar forward Blake Griffin will miss at least two weeks with a partially torn left quadriceps tendon, the team announced Saturday.
Griffin suffered the injury early in Friday’s win over crosstown rival Lakers. He played the rest of the game and finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. On Saturday, Griffin had an MRI that revealed the injury. He did not accompany the team to Utah as they continue a five-game road trip, and will be re-evaluated in two weeks.
The earliest Griffin could return is January 9 against Charlotte, which would mean missing six games. The 6-10 Griffin is 10th in the NBA with a team-high 23.2 points per game. He also is averaging 8.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists while shooting nearly 51 per cent from the field. He is third among Western Conference frontcourt players in All-Star balloting released Friday.
Griffin has been the best player on the Clippers, who are fourth in the West with a 17-13 record but have sputtered at times. His absence will put pressure on a bench that ranks in the bottom third of the league in both scoring and rebounding.
The top overall pick in the 2009, Griffin missed his entire first season with a broken left kneecap. He then missed just four games over the next three seasons before sitting out 15 contests last season with a staph infection in his right elbow. The Clippers went 9-6 in his absence.
Griffin, 26, has career averages of 21.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 405 games, all with the Clippers. He is a five-time All-Star and won Rookie of the Year and the Slam Dunk Contest in 2011.
