The Language Centre at the Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) of Hamad Bin Khalifa University, a member of Qatar Foundation, took part in the Made in China 2015 event, the first comprehensive showcase and trading platform in Qatar for high-end Chinese productions and solutions in the field of construction, science and technology.
By reaching out to the governmental and corporate community interested in building a relationship with China, TII aims to illuminate how language learning can be of benefit not only personally, but also professionally.
Meanwhile, TII is accepting applications for its spring 2016 programmes and registration for courses in various proficiency levels in Arabic, French, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese will remain open until January 12.
TII’s Language Centre seeks to turn its students to lifelong learners, providing quality language instruction in the classroom, as well as opportunities to take learning into the community. In previous years, students have been invited to attend events with the Chinese ambassador, and travelled with their class to Grenada, Spain, and to Tours, France, where they were given the chance to live with local families.
Asaad Kahlout, director of TII’s Language Centre, explained: “Our classes tend to be quite diverse with students beginning their study from different backgrounds, motivated by a multitude of reasons and with varying levels of understanding of the target culture. In order to drive class participation and engagement, teachers often assign group work and encourage students to support the learning of their classmates.”
The courses at TII take place twice a week and are conveniently timed. Morning sessions are available at 9am – 10:30am or 11am – 12:30pm and evening sessions are available at 5:00pm – 6:30pm or 7pm – 8:30pm. Students are also granted access to TII’s state-of-the-art labs to supplement textbook study and practise active listening.
