Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal went top of the World Cup overall standings despite finishing only seventh in yesterday’s downhill in Santa Caterina which was won by Adrien Theaux of France.
Theaux posted a winning time of 1 minute 47.29 seconds to claim his third World Cup career victory, and first of the season, 1.04 seconds ahead of Austria’s Hannes Reichelt. Another Frenchman, David Poisson, could celebrate his first-ever career podium place in third, a further 11 hundredths behind.
With previous standings leader Marcel Hirscher, a technical specialist, not in the race, Svindal had the chance to leapfrog him into top spot and now leads on 636 points to the Austrian’s 621.
However, finishing 1.61 seconds off the pace represents an opportunity missed for Svindal to put the pressure on four-time reigning overall champion Hirscher before the World Cup continues with a slalom, again in Santa Caterina, on January 6.
