Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic insisted he has no intention of leaving the French champions despite his contract being due to run out at the end of the season.
The 34-year-old, who played in PSG’s 1-0 friendly win over his former club Inter Milan in Doha on Wednesday, has been heavily linked with a move to MLS and the Premier League.
But Ibrahimovic said that “nothing was on the table” regarding future offers and he was happy in the French capital with PSG riding high in their bid for a fourth straight Ligue 1 title. “I have a beautiful relationship with PSG. I have no intention of leaving,” said the Swede when asked about his future plans.
Ibrahimovic, who joined PSG from Inter in 2012, was booed by the Italian club’s fans in Doha before being substituted in the 64th minute to a mixture of cheers and jeers.
China to bid for 2023 Asian Cup
China is preparing to bid for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, the continent’s biggest football championship, the country’s top soccer authority said as it hopes to one day host the World Cup.
The Chinese Football Association is soliciting input for a possible application to host the tournament, it said in a letter to its members posted on its website. The bid will require at least six cities and eight stadiums to host a total of 51 competitions in the month-long contest, which is held every four years.
China is the world’s most populous country and its second-largest economy, but its football team languishes in 84th place in the Fifa world rankings, and it is on the verge of elimination for Russia 2018 after a 0-0 draw with Hong Kong in November.
President Xi Jinping has called on the nation to up its game with the goals of eventually hosting and winning a World Cup—a tournament in which it has only appeared once, in 2002.
The drive has seen schools and government organisations looking to promote the game, while Chinese Super League clubs have lured foreign players and coaches with lucrative deals. Chinese football long suffered from endemic corruption, with a history of match-rigging and bribery, but authorities have sought to clean up the game in recent years.
China hosted the Asian Cup in 2004 and reached the final, but lost 3-1 to neighbour and rival Japan, triggering a riot by fans. Cities must have an international airport and at least 10 five-star hotels to be considered for inclusion in the 2023 bid, the CFA statement said.
Coach Ranieri gives Leicester
players NYE pass
Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has given his high-flying players permission to go out and celebrate on New Year’s Eve, provided they perform in tomorrow’s home game against Bournemouth. Leicester begin 2016 in second place in the Premier League table, level on points with leaders Arsenal, after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.
But while Ranieri is happy for his players to celebrate their achievement, he does not want them to go too far. “They can celebrate. They are very, very good professionals,” the Italian told his pre-game press conference yesterday. “It’s important to celebrate, to enjoy it, because it was a fantastic 2015, but afterwards we have to put our minds on Bournemouth.
“They are a very dangerous team. Bournemouth lost five in a row, but before losing to Arsenal (2-0 on Monday) they made a fantastic positive run. For us it’s important to concentrate 100 percent.”
Stoke star Butland donates to women’s deaf team
Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland has donated £5,000 ($7,370, 6,785 euros) to Great Britain’s women’s deaf football team to ensure they can compete in this year’s World Cup.
An online appeal aiming to raise £10,000, half the amount the British team need to attend the Deaf World Cup in Italy in June, has now reached its target thanks to Butland’s generous donation. Claire Stancliffe, who won bronze with Britain’s deaf team at the 2008 World Cup, praised Butland, 22, for helping the squad’s hopes of attending the tournament.
“Physically shaking. Thank you so much Jack Butland for the £5,000 donation. We are in shock,” she tweeted.
Explaining why he wanted to make the donation, Butland tweeted: “I’ve learnt a lot from major tournaments, experiences I’ll never forget, I’d love for you to experience the same!”
Butland, who has three England caps, also works as an ambassador for the Kick It Out anti-discrimination campaign.
Pellegrini says Manchester City have ‘complete’ squad
Manchester City’s Manuel Pellegrini could be one of the least active Premier League managers in the January transfer window after declaring his title-chasing squad “complete” yesterday.
The Abu Dhabi-owned club were English soccer’s biggest spenders in the summer, splashing out heavily on the likes of forwards Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne and defender Nicolas Otamendi.
“Really I think this squad is complete,” Pellegrini told reporters ahead of City’s trip to high-flying Watford tomorrow. “As always I said that we are not going to close the window but we are not really thinking of any special players to bring in,” added the Chilean.
City, three points behind leaders Arsenal and Leicester City at the halfway stage of the season, will be without injured captain Vincent Kompany for at least a month while Samir Nasri is also on the absentee list.
