Inter Milan forward Stevan Jovetic believes there can only be one favourite to win the FIFA Ballon D’Or award this year – describing the player in question an inspiration and the best who has ever played the game.
“For me, Lionel Messi is the best,” Jovetic told www.sc.qa in an interview in Doha. “He is the best in the history of the game. First is Messi and then come all the others. He is an inspiration for me.”
The skilful striker from Montenegro has returned to form this season and helped with four goals and two assists as Roberto Mancini’s side spent the winter break at the top of the Serie A table. He has warned Inter’s rivals Mancini’s side can still get better this season, something which would bode well for their dreams of lifting the title this summer.
“We are doing well and have good players but we can still improve more in the next games,” Jovetic said. “It is still too early to talk about the title, but our target is to be in the top three and get back into the Champions League. Then in April or May we will see where we are and what else we can do.”
After two seasons at Manchester City where he did not manage to break into the first team, Jovetic says he is enjoying his football in Milan and expects to increase his goal tally even further this season.
He added: “During the two years at Manchester City I did not get the chance to play much, so I had a lot of desire to show people what I am capable of doing. I am really happy with the way I have been playing, scoring some goals and giving assists. I expect to score more goals.”
Jovetic admitted that one crucial factor in his confident start to the season has been the trust placed in him by coach Roberto Mancini: “It is always important when you have the support of the manager, and I will try my best on the pitch to say thank you to him.”
With the Milan giants having concluded their week-long winter training camp in Doha, Jovetic also praised the sports infrastructure in the Qatari capital.
“The infrastructure of stadiums and training pitches is fantastic, and I don’t have any doubt that Qatar 2022 will be a great World Cup,” he concluded.
