The athletics governing body IAAF said yesterday that two new members had been added to its ethics commission having been approved by president Sebastian Coe and the council in December.
Justice Catherine O’Regan, a former judge of the constitutional court judge in South Africa and an ad hoc judge of the Namibian supreme court, and Singaporean lawyer Annabel Pennefather were those appointed to the now nine-person commission.
Pennefather is currently a vice president of the Singapore National Olympic Council.
The IAAF has recently been hit by allegations of bribery and cover-ups while Russian athletes have been suspended from competition due to their country operating a programme of systematic doping.
On Tuesday Coe issued a 10-point road map towards restoring trust in the governing body and the sport of athletics, warning that change was needed.
“Be under no illusion about how seriously I take these issues,” he said. “I am president of an international federation which is under serious investigations and I represent a sport under intense scrutiny.
“My vision is to have a sport that attracts more young people. The average age of those watching track and field is 55 years old. This is not sustainable.
“The key to making that vision a reality is creating a sport that people once more trust in. Athletics must be a sport that athletes, fans, sponsors, media and parents alike know is safe to compete in on a level playing field and one in which clean effort is rewarded and celebrated.”
Coe’s vision for the future includes doubling the anti-doping budget to 8 million dollars, increasing the pool of athletes tested for doping and restructuring the IAAF to increase transparency.

Saying goodbye is never easy, especially when you are saying farewell to those that have left a positive impression. That was the case earlier this month when Canada hosted Mexico in a friendly at BC Place stadium in Vancouver.
