Local Organizing Committee (LOC) COO Ahmed al-Harami has assured that the upcoming AFC U23 Championships in Qatar are on track ahead of the big kick-off on January 12.
Al-Harami said that the LOC has relied on mixture of young Qatari talent supported by experienced professionals.
He said: “In terms of the facilities, special arrangements are already in place. The four main venues — Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium in Lekhwiya Sports Club, Jassem Bin Hamad Stadium in Al Sadd Sports Club, Grand Hamad Stadium in Al Arabi Sports Club and Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium in Qatar Sports Club — are all ready to host the key events, along with official hotels allocated for the participating national teams.”
Al-Harami explained that the preparations for the event have been accomplished in co-ordination with several entities. “The LOC consists of the Ministry of Youth & Sports, QFA, QSL, Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, Aspire and Aspetar. All of these organisations have played a major part in the delivery and planning of this tournament,” he said.
“We are holding regular meetings with the AFC and are currently in the final phase of hosting this prestigious competition.”
Al-Harami informed that the official accreditation centre, located at Hamad Bin Attiyah Indoor Hall, has already started working on Wednesday and will deliver up to 4000 accreditations for the national teams, delegations and media representatives.
Talking about the marketing campaign in the run-up to the tournament, he said, “The promotional campaign is already in place on the streets and squares in addition to the mascot (Najim) tours. We would like to encourage the fans to come to the stadium for the matches.”
The official opening ceremony will be at 7pm on Tuesday, January 12 at the Lekhwiya stadium, half an hour prior to the game between Qatar and China. The opening game of the tournament will be held at 4:30pm between Syria and Iran at Jassim Bin Hamad stadium.
Sixteen top teams will participate in the AFC U23 Championship finals with the top three teams qualifying automatically to 2016 Rio Olympics.
Tickets for all the matches are available on Qatar Football Association website: www.qfa.qa.
Tickets can also be bought from the booths at Landmark and Villaggio malls from 4pm to 10pm daily, besides the tournament venues. Ticket prices range from QR 10 to QR 100, while entry is free for children and disabled fans.
