Experienced Rashid Hamad al-Athba defeated Masoud Ali al-Athba to win double trap gold of the Qatar Cup at the Losail Losail Shooting Complex yesterday.
The former double world championship silver medallist Rashid won the well-contested final 28-26.
In the bronze medal round, Hamad Ali al-Marri defeated Masoud Hamad al-Athba 26-25 in a thrilling finish.
Masoud dominated the five rounds of the qualifying phase and collected 128 but he could not repeat the performance and was beaten narrowly by Hamad Ali.
Rashid Hamad, fourth in the 2012 London Olympics and 2014 Incheon Asian Games, used his experience in the semi-finals and topped the round to qualify for the title match, while Masoud was two targets less than the winner.
“We had a difficult competition right from the first qualifying series. It got more intense in the semi-finals and the final was a big test of nerves. Thank god, I was able to keep myself focused and won the title ahead of the Asian qualifiers which will be held in India,” Rashid Hamad, Rashid, who led Masoud Hamad al-Athba and Hamad al-Marri to clinch the 2014 Asian Games double trap team gold medal, said.
“The close contest will help other shooters, who are nurturing the hopes of getting a quota place for the Rio Games,” he said.
Head of the shotgun team Ibrahim al-Mohannadi gave away the prizes and said the Qatari shooters would fare well in the upcoming Olympic Games qualifying event in New Delhi.
