Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Bone and Joint Centre offered a physiotherapy course for the first time, alongside the regular examination-focused Qatar Orthopaedic Review Course which is held for the third time in Qatar.
“The Qatar Orthopaedic Review Course is a pioneering initiative in the region – it has made high-quality training more accessible for orthopaedic residents who previously had to travel abroad to prepare for their board exams,” said course director Dr Mohamed al-Khayarin, senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at HMC.
“On January 10 and 13, we also held our first Qatar Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Course specifically for physiotherapists,” said Dr AbdulAziz al-Kuwari, orthopaedic spine consultant at HMC, and one of the course organisers.
“This has been a great opportunity for every physical therapist to update their skills and acquire new knowledge in both paediatric and adult orthopaedic care. The course covered the physical therapy approach to disorders or injuries of the spine and the upper and lower extremities, as well as the manual therapy techniques used in the field.”
The Bone and Joint Centre has been collaborating with faculty from Johns Hopkins Medicine and other leaders in orthopaedic care, teaching and research in the United States in providing the Qatar Orthopaedic Review Course, which was first offered in January 2014. The review course is supported by HMC’s Medical Education Department and is part of HMC’s strategy for raising the standards of graduate medical education in the region.
The course is popular not only in Qatar but has also attracted many participants from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. Orthopaedic residents take the course to prepare for their board examinations including the Arab Board, the Royal College of Surgeons of England Fellowship examinations, the Saudi Board, and the Jordanian Board. Orthopaedists seeking recertification or those who simply want to refresh their knowledge are also encouraged to register for the course in the future by sending an e-mail to orthoreview@hamad.qa.
