An exhibition of tapestry designs created by Paloma Torres from Mexico has opened at Katara - the Cultural Village.
Katara general manager Dr Khalid Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, who inaugurated the exhibition, expressed the hope the event would promote more interest in such unique creative works among the art lovers of Qatar.
“The works on display will not only attract more people in the coming days but they would also contribute to the hosting of similar creative and artistic works in future,” he said, adding the Cultural Village was looking forward to hosting art and cultural events different from those held elsewhere.
Torres, a graduate in visual art, is showcasing fabrics with pictures and designs created by weaving coloured waft threads. She has embroidered pictures on canvas and they are displayed as wall hangings and furniture tops.
She has also displayed table items, which are used to decorate showcases and tables.
Al-Sulaiti was introduced to the topic of tapestry by Mexican Ambassador Francisco Niembro and the artist.
The show is the first cultural event to be hosted by the Mexican embassy after its formal opening in less than four months ago.
As part of the event, a workshop is planned for tapestry enthusiasts. The expo, which is held at Building 19 of Katara, will continue until the end of this month.
