Strengthening Beijing’s influence in the volatile Middle East seemed to be the name of the game yesterday as Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Egypt, part of a three-nation tour that has already taken him to Saudi Arabia.
Egyptian state television yesterday showed Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi welcoming Xi during the Chinese leader’s arrival at the Cairo airport, the first visit by a Chinese head of state to Egypt in 12 years.
During Xi’s two-day visit, Egypt and China will sign several economic agreements related to civil aviation, electricity and transport, as well as one on the construction of Egypt’s new administrative capital outside of Cairo, the online edition of the state-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported.
Egypt is seeking foreign investment to revitalise its economy, battered by political upheaval since the 2011 uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
Xi will also give an address at the Cairo-based Arab League about China’s Middle East policy, according to Al-Ahram.
