A British national residing in Muscat and a team of Omani explorers who have embarked on an expedition named Crossing the Empty Quarter, are expected to reach Doha
sometime next week.
The expedition started from Salalah in Oman and will cover about 1,300km by foot and on camel through the Arabian dessert. The journey will end in Doha.
The team comprises of Mohamed al-Zadjali, Amour al-Wahaibi, Mark Evans, Sheikh Mubarak Saleh Mohamed Saleh bin Kalut and Ali Ahmed Sha’af Al Mshili. They are supported by Sim Davis (photographer/driver) John C Smith (photographer/driver) Dr Sean Hudson (on call medical support) and John Apps (on call medical support)
The patrons of the expedition are HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, president of Qatar Olympic Committee; Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq al-Said, Minister of Culture and Heritage, Sultanate of Oman; and the Prince of Wales in the UK.
The expedition replicates a similar journey that was made across the world’s largest sand desert Rub Al Khali in 1930. The expedition was made by the British citizen, Bertram Thomas, and Omani Sheikh Saleh bin Kalut al-Rashidi al-Kathiri.
The present adventure has so far completed 41 days as of yesterday and the team was 199km away from Doha and might have entered into the last leg of their expedition. It is expected that the team will be received by several Qatari youngsters at the Qatar
border.
