Lleyton Hewitt has received plenty of tributes during his farewell tournament but perhaps the strangest came from Andy Murray, who revealed he had named a dog after the Australian star. Using Hewitt’s nickname, Murray christened the dog ‘Rusty’ in honour of one of his favourite players.
“I actually named one of my dogs after him because he was someone who I loved growing up,” Murray said. “He was an idol for me but when I came on the tour he was always very nice to me... you remember that as you get older.” Murray has a special fondness for animals, also revealing that his first pet was a hamster called Whiskey which he got when he was 10.
Aces low for Pliskova
A record-breaking 31 aces weren’t enough for Kristyna Pliskova as she exited the Australian Open against Monica Puig. Pliskova’s 31, including two off the second serve, eclipsed Sabine Lisicki’s previous WTA mark of 27. But the Czech player, identical twin sister of 12th-ranked Karolina, still lost in three tight sets to Puerto Rico’s Puig. “I would rather hit 20 aces and win,” said the despondent Czech.
Watch out, he’s got a fade-away dropper
Australia’s Nick Krygios said he was working hard to emulate the shot invented by his close friend Bernard Tomic: the fade-away drop-shot, or fade-away dropper. The disguised drop-shot, which starts off looking like a normal forehand but spins and dies just over the net, can be devastating because it is often completely unexpected. The trouble is, it also often fails. “Every time we meet up, we sort of have a competition on who can do it the best. He (Tomic) definitely invented that shot,” Krygios said. “Every time I get the opportunity, I try and top it for some reason, and it got me in a little bit of trouble, to be honest. But it’s worth it when it comes off.”
