The Oklahoma City Thunder couldn’t weather the storm and got snowed under.
Brook Lopez had a season-high 31 points with 10 rebounds, and the lowly Brooklyn Nets cooled off the red-hot Thunder’s season-high seven-game winning streak, with a 116-106 victory on Sunday.
“I thought Brook was outstanding,” Nets interim head coach Tony Brown said of his centre. “That’s the type of showing I would like to see from him going forward.”
Originally scheduled as a matinee, the game was pushed back four hours due to one of the worst blizzards to ever hit New York City. Winter storm “Jonas” dumped 60 to 90 centimetres of snow in and around the north-east area of the country Saturday, causing the league to postpone games in Washington and Philadelphia.
“We talked about not being able to practice on Saturday because of snow, and even the possibility the game might get postponed,” Brown said. The Nets found it to be refreshing and had no problems once inside the packed Barclays Center in the wire-to-wire win against the Northwest Division leaders.
“We played at another level energy-wise and confidence-wise,” Lopez said. “We trusted each other and we played together for essentially a full game.”
Bogan Bogdanovic fired in 18 points off the bench while Thaddeus Young had 14 with as many rebounds for the Nets (12-33) who snapped a five-game slide with just their second win in the last 15 home games.
“We played great,” Bogdanovic said. “We played great defence and limited their players.”
Kevin Durant had 32 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists to pace the Thunder (33-13), while fellow All-Star Russell Westbrook finished with 27 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.
“Not to take anything away from Brooklyn because they played well in a lot of different phases but we didn’t put ourselves in a position to win the game,” Thunder coach Billy Donovan explained.
“The last six or seven games we’ve been trending in the right way and for whatever reason we were off. We didn’t play at the level I know those guys wanted to play at. We battled and fought but we couldn’t keep it going.”
Brooklyn shot a hot 57 per cent and held a held a two-point lead after the opening quarter that grew to 60-52 at halftime behind 14 points from Lopez.
The Nets opened up a 13-point cushion in the third that was trimmed to 81-77, before an 8-0 period-ending run restored it to 85-77 heading into the final 12 minutes. The Thunder drew to within 98-93 midway through the fourth frame but the Nets responded.
Young sandwiched a tip-in and jumper around a follow basket by Lopez, that quickly pushed the lead to 104-93 with 4:11 remaining before cruising home.
“This was exactly the type of test we needed,” Lopez explained. “We didn’t play well against Utah on Friday, so this was a perfect time for a team like this to come in. We know we needed to step up and we did.”
