Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday disclosed that formation of a specialised unit of police is underway to combat terrorism and militancy in the country.
“A process is underway to constitute a specialised unit to increase the capability of police to combat terrorism and militancy,” she said while inaugurating
Police Week-2016 in Dhaka.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to further strengthen the police force, the prime minister said plans are under consideration to create 50,000 new posts in the police force so that they remain
prepared to face any situation.
“We want to impart training to police personnel in the way they remain equipped for any situation,” she said.
Calling terrorism a globe phenomenon, she said “terrorism and militancy could not raise their ugly head in Bangladesh as the law enforcement agencies remain alert to this end”.
Elaborating her government’s various steps for development and welfare of the police force, the PM said the police strength has topped 150,000 thanks to timely steps of her
administration.
“We created 32,031 posts in police organogram including 739 cadre posts over the last seven years. However, the manpower is still not proportionate to population ... considering this, we have decided to create 50,000 more posts,” she said.
The prime minister said recruitment for 13,558 posts, including 277 cadre posts, has already been completed. “The process for recruiting more manpower would be completed soon.”
