Three of the Nepalese ethnic communities celebrated their winter festivals, or harvest festivals, at different places of Doha marking the arrival of spring in the Himalayan nation. Non-Resident Bhujel Society-Qatar celebrated Udhauli, Nepal Magar Association celebrated Maghe Sankranti, and Sunuwar Service Society, Kirat Rai Yayokkha and Kirat Yakthung Chumlung jointly celebrated New Year.
Bhujel Society celebrated their biggest festival amidst an event organised in Al Shamal Park recently. It was chaired by society’s head Niyam Bhujel, and attended by Siya Ram Chaudhary, chairman of Non-Resident Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NNFIN), Binesh Tamang, chairman of Non-Resident Nepalese Association-National Coordination Committee (NRNA-NCC), and Lilmachidhi Magar, chairman of Palpa Service Society (PSS), among others.

The programme was hosted by Society’s general secretary Shiba Kumar Bhujel, and Treasurer Bir Bahadur Bhujel delivered the welcome speech. Likewise, first chairman Milan Bhujel shared with the audience about the importance of the festival. Cultural performances and sport competitions were held. Bhujel artists performed their cultural dance and some of the artists performed the dance in Nepali cinema song.
Sunuwar Service Society (SSS), Kirat Rai Yayokkha (KRY) and Kirat Yakthung Chumlung (KYC) jointly organised a cultural programme to celebrate their New Year Yele sambat 5076 in Al Shamal Public Garden. The programme was chaired by SSS chairman Nar Bahadur Sunuwar. Siya Ram Chaudhary, chairman of Non-Resident Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NNFIN), KRY chairman Amrit Kumar Rai, and KYC chairman Man Kumar Aangbo attended the programme as guests.

Cultural troupes performed folk dances and audiences were served indigenous meals. Yele sambat is Kiranti New Year of Nepal and it used to be celebrated on the day of Magh Sri Panchami or Sukla Panchami. The Yele name is derived from King Yelamber who officially declared the day as new year for Kiranti people of Nepal.
Nepal Magar Association-Qatar (NMA) organised a cultural programme to celebrate Maghe Sankranti in Al Shamal Public Garden amidst a crowd of over 1,500. NMA chairman Mahendra Thapa chaired, and first chairman Sher Bahadur Roka Magar co-ordinated the programme.
Second Secretary at the Nepalese Embassy, Nitesh Kumar Sapkota, was the chief guest. The programme was attended by representatives of Qatar-based Nepalese organisations among others. Nepalese magar celebrate the festival to mark the end of winter into upcoming spring where the temperature is getting warmer and days are getting longer.
During the programme, NMA served the audience with special Maghe Sankranti cuisines including sweet potatoes, pickle, fruits, and food.
NMA selected its Bang (King) as a part of their tradition. River Thapa Magar managed to become Bang by being first in one running competition. Artists performed cultural dances including Hurra, Jhyaure, Kaura, Salaiju, Sorathi and Chudka. Popular singers Biren Shrestha, Bijaya Ranapali, Nanu Ghale and Naba Raj Shrestha performed their best numbers. NMA also felicitated the new working committee members of NRNA—NCC.
