Al-Attiyah eyes a good start to MERC with Qatar rally win

Defending Middle East rally champion Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah will be looking to start the series with a morale-boosting win when the Qatar International Rally 2016 kicks off the season February 4-6.
“First of all, I would like to welcome all the participants and wish them a good stay in Qatar,” said al-Attiyah, who will be competing in a Skoda Fabia R5 along with his French co-driver Matthieu Baumel. “As far as my participation in the Qatar Rally is concerned, I will do my best to achieve the win. That will be a good start to the Middle East Rally Championship season. I have good memories from this rally from last year and I am hoping for a repeat this year.”
Al-Attiyah, who won four championships last year including his 11th MERC title, is fresh of a second-place finish in the gruelling Dakar Rally.
Talking about the challenges that the Qatar International Rally poses to the competitors, al-Attiyah said, “Each round has its own geographical conditions; they should be handled according to a well-thought out plan, which is not strange for us. The geographical diversity is the most important feature of this championship which attracts a large number of participants from Europe.”
A win in the Qatar rally will mean that al-Attiyah breaks Mohamed bin Sulayem’s 60 MERC win record.
Qatar International Rally 2016 will also see participation from Europe, which is a positive indicator of the level of rally.
The Super Special Stage of the rally with 15 competitors will begin at 2pm on February 4, with the official competition running February 5-6 before concluding at QMMF headquarters.
