Kahramaa assessing condition of its assets

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has initiated a project to monitor the condition and management of its assets, including the 11kV electricity distribution network in the country.
A first of its kind project in the GCC, it covers the entire electricity distribution network, according to a Kahramaa statement.
The project is part of Kahramaa’s endeavour to achieve its mission of providing sustainable electricity and water supply for better living in Qatar, it said.
The project is being executed by electricity distribution department with the aim of carrying out a comprehensive condition monitoring programme of more than 11,000 distribution substations in-live condition (in service condition) within three years.
The purpose is to assess the health of the assets and prioritise the interventions based on the severity of the condition and criticality of the asset. Each asset is monitored for a set of parameters and a quantified scoring system is used to represent its health as per actual site conditions.
The asset health model was evolved based on Kahramaa’s experience and recommendations as per international standards.
In 2015, Kahramaa completed monitoring the condition of 69% of its network which involves more than 7,750 substations and more than 45,000 assets. The overall asset health index stands at 94%, reflecting the good conditions of the assets.
Out of 45190 assets inspected so far, 97% of the assets are in good / very good condition and only 3% of the assets are categorised as ‘fair’.
