15 agricultural projects get financing approval

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), in co-operation with Qatar Development Bank, has approved the financing of 15 new agricultural projects at 1-1.5% interest rate.

The projects will involve the production of vegetables and fodder, creation of greenhouses and irrigation networks and the purchase of agricultural equipment, local Arabic daily Al Sharq has reported.

Statistics show that there are currently 1,340 farms registered in the country with 839 active ones. Some 36,122 hectares are covered by such farms with around 21,673 hectares of arable land.

Tomato is the main local agricultural product in the vegetable category, with the plant covering a space of around 330 hectares and having a yearly production of 12,109 tonnes.

Zucchini is next, accounting for 264 hectares with an annual production of around 4,227 tonnes, followed by eggplant, covering 125 hectares.

In the grains category, maize is main product in the country, covering a space of around 96 hectares and having a yearly production of 1,211 tonnes. Barley comes next with an annual yield of 600 tonnes, followed by wheat at 86 tonnes a year.

The country also produces around 35,258 tonnes of dates covering around 88.4% of the local consumption.
