Katara – the Cultural Village hosted more than 80 events as part of the celebrations for National Sport Day under the theme “Be the Champion.”
Popular crowd drawers included both marine and aerial activities, which also utilised the Katara Beach. Basketball, football, and beach handball were also held at the esplanade and the beach.
The games were accompanied by health and wellness institutes, which offered health tips and medical check-ups to visitors and participants of the games.
For this year’s celebrations, Katara added new activities like chess, biking, yoga, horse riding, and film screenings, among many others. The lineup also included activities presented by a number of ministries, sports federations, and other organisations.
Dr Khaled bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, Katara general manager, said: “Katara has created such a nuanced approach to National Sport Day to establish sports as a lifestyle and culture across the state of Qatar. These endeavours and efforts are in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, which seeks to make sports an important and integral part of the lives of both Qataris and residents.”
He also said Katara has become “an institution and international point for culture, arts, and intellectual thought to exist side-by-side with sports, leisure, and tourism.”
HE the Minister of Industry and Energy Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada and HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment Mohamed bin Abdullah al-Rumaihi also visited Katara to experience the festivities. Qatar University president Dr Hassan al-Derham and Qatar Basketball Federation president Sheikh Saud Abdulrahman al-Thani were also present.
Included among the organisers that participated yesterday are Qatar Basketball Federation, Qatar Volleyball Association, Qatar Karate Federation, Qatar Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Federation, Qatar Chess Association, Qatar Equestrian Federation, Ministry of Economy and Commerce, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation, Qatar University, Qatar Lawyers Association, and Healthy Katara Food Market.
The Kid’s Sport Village at Katara also recorded a significant turnout of visitors, who enjoyed the activities and facilities of the area.
