Minister of Energy and Industry HE Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada has visited Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation's (Kahramaa) Awareness Park at Al-Thumama, under construction water reservoir at Rawdat Rashid and Major Transmission and Distribution Centre in Duhail.
During the visit, the minister was briefed on the developments and projects initiated by Kahramaa to improve uninterrupted supply of water and electricity to the country's residents. At each of the three facilities Dr al-Sada was briefed by senior officials and engineers who were in charge of the three locations.
The 11/66/220 kv Duhail Major station was commissioned in March last year at a cost of QR255mn. It feeds areas surrounding Wadi al-Banat through an underground cable of 220kv. The station also serves Jairiyan Al Janehat and suburbs through a 7.5-km underground cable of 66kv. Similarly, Laqwiya HQ and its neighbourhoods are also supplied from the Duhail station.
While on a visit to the site of the under-development water reservoir in Rawdat Rashid, which is one of the 24 water storage reservoirs being built across the country, the minister was briefed on the advantages of huge facilities for storing water in Qatar where there has been a phenomenal rise in population in the past decade.
The 24 reservoirs together could store 2,300MIGD of water, which would be adequate to meet the requirements of upto 2026. Altogether 650km of pipes of different diameters are laid as part of the ambitious project. The reservoirs are connected to the desalination facilities in Ras Aboud and Ras Laffan areas.
The continuous expansion would ensure that no less than 3,800MIGD of water would be stored when the expansion is complete in 2036.
At the Awareness Park, officials told the minister about the corporation's ongoing efforts to make residents aware of the necessity of reducing water and electricity consumption across the country.
They also briefed the minister about the facilities at the park which are visited at intervals by university and school children. They explained how the place is helping to create enormous awareness among the country's residents about the importance of conserving and preserving natural resources.
