The Nepalese People Coordination Committee-Qatar (NPCC), a sister organisation of Nepali Congress, recently hosted the 13th day ritual programme of the late Sushil Koirela, former Nepalese prime minister and party president.
People offered garlands to the portrait of Koirala at the programme, which was chaired by NPCC Vice-President Debaraj Abasthi. Lifetime patron Badri Prasad Pandey was the guest of the honour. Representatives of Nepalese Overseas Forum-Qatar, Nepalese Progressive Front, Nepalese United Society, Nepalese Democratic Front and the supporters and sympathisers of NPCC participated in the programme.
Former PM Sushil Koirala hailed from the west of Nepal. Koirala joined politics in 1954 after being impressed by the socio-democratic ideals of Nepali Congress party. Koirala has been the central committee member of the party since 1979, became its vice-president in 1998 and president in 2010.
He was elected as prime minister of Nepal in February 2014. He had agreed to step down after the constitution was promulgated, to pave the way for new leadership, but had a change of heart and decided to seek re-election in October.
Koirala died of cardiac arrest after suffering from a bout of pneumonia. He was 78.
