Newly released Nepalese film Kabaddi, Kabaddi was screened at Global Cinema Hall recently. More than 500 Nepalese expats showed up for the screening that was organised by Okhaldunga Service Society (OSS). The movie has been directed by Ram Babu Gurung and produced by Raunak Bikram Kandel. It stars popular Nepalese film actors, Dayahang Rai, Nischal Basnet and Rishma Gurung. Proceeds from the screening will go to fund an ambulance in OSS’s home district in Nepal.
The film is a love triangle of sorts and takes place in the varied terrain of Mustang, in the northernmost region of Nepal. Kazi, a youngster who not much to do, dreams of marrying Maiya. Even though Kazi is her cousin, and the Mustang custom looks favourably upon marriage between cousins, Maiya is reluctant. She instead falls for Bibek, who comes from Kathmandu. He takes her with him to Kathmandu and Kazi decides to go after them.
Dayahang Rai, a former theatre artist, is spot on with his performance as Kazi. He passes his days by formulating plans on how to win the girl of his dreams, with the help of his two slacking sidekicks. Bibek, played by Nischal Basnet, is an intruder in the sluggish village of Naurikot and traps Maiya to execute his revenge.
All in all, the film is entertaining and thrilling, with the carefully tailored script giving a good dose of comic relief from the heavier scenes.
