Thai minister hails workers’ welfare

Thai Labour Minister Sirchai Distakul has praised the standards of Qatar’s Labour City.
“This is one of the best and most well-equipped worker accommodation sites I have visited. I am extremely pleased with the standard of welfare available to workers here,” the minister, who is on a two-day visit to Qatar, said yesterday.
Labour City is a clear indication that Qatar is determined to set the standard of worker welfare in this region, said Distakul.
HE the Minister of Administrative Development and Labour and Social Affairs Dr Issa bin Saad al-Jafali al-Nuaimi said: “We are extremely proud of Thai nationals’ contribution to Qatar’s development and growth. As we move towards realising Qatar National Vision 2030 we look forward to welcoming more highly skilled individuals from Thailand over the coming years.”
Labour City can accommodate some 100,000 foreign workers, who come to the Gulf state to participate in its construction projects, such as those for the 2022 FIFA World
Cup.
Labour City, which lies 14km from Doha and covers an area of 1,100,000sq m, is just one of seven accommodation complexes that the government is building to house almost 340,000 labour migrants.
There are more than 4,000 Thai workers currently in Qatar with the Qatari minister suggesting there should be more.
