Doha-based driver Charlie Frijns has today produced a superb performance to qualify on pole position of the opening race of the final round of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East Season 7. For Frijns this is the second time he has qualified on pole at the Bahrain International Circuit, a feat he accomplished during the first race of the season.
Qatar based Charlie Frijns continues his hunt for a podium position in the overall driver’s title as he currently sits in fourth place just 22 points adrift of third-placed Ryan Cullen and with a maximum of 25 points per race available this weekend. Clearly it is still all to play for especially thanks to Frijns performance in qualifying, with rival for a podium place, Cullen languishing down in fifth on the grid.
A strong qualifying session saw drivers pushing to deliver their fastest times of the Championship as the weekend sees the curtain close on the 2015/16 season. Each driver will know that putting everything into these last two races of the season could potentially cause upset across all categories in the driver’s standings with results over the previous few rounds leaving things too close to call.
Following qualifying, Charlie Frijns said: “I feel really good after qualifying, this is my third pole of the season and always feels good to get the fastest times when it really matters. It actually wasn’t my quickest lap of the weekend so far so I know I can go faster out on the track but I managed to get into pole position for Race 1 which is the most important thing and gives me a great chance to get maximum points here in the first race.
“I was aiming to get into the top 4 for qualifying but when I came back In and everyone was clapping and around the car I knew I had got pole. I now need to take this into the race and look for my first win of the season!”
Regarded as the purest form of racing, every lap and every corner of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East counts. Qualifying is split by hundredths of seconds and racing is pushed to the limits with driver talent and race craft the difference between winning and losing as all drivers competing in identical fifth generation Porsche 911 GT3 Cups.
The unique one-make series consists of 12 races between November 2015 and March 2016. Season 7 concludes at the illustrious Bahrain International Circuit between 4th and 5th March.
