Qatari humanitarian organisations and the United Nations Office for Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) during a roundtable in Doha discussed humanitarian work in the Sahel countries, and means of boosting co-operation and building partnerships to meet the escalating humanitarian needs of those countries.
The roundtable was attended by UN Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Humanitarian Co-ordinator for the Sahel, Toby Lanzer, and representatives of Qatari humanitarian associations and institutions, including Qatar Red Crescent, Qatar Charity, Sheikh Eid Charitable Association, Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF), Al Faisal Without Borders, l Asmakh Charity Foundation (ACF), Education Above All, and Silatech.
The Qatari organisations made presentations of their charitable work in many Sahel countries.
Yusuf bin Ahmed al-Kuwari, chief executive officer, Qatar Charity, expressed his thanks and appreciation to all those who participated in the meeting.
“Qatar Charity attaches great importance to this region over its humanitarian activities and programmes and has offices in Chad, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso and Mauritania,” he said, adding that Qatar Charity also works through international and local partners in these countries.
Over the last three years, Qatar Charity carried out more than 6,000 projects worth QR148mn. The projects included sectors such as education, health, water and sanitation, food security, livelihoods, economic empowerment and other various fields.
Al-Kuwari stressed the importance of co-ordination and co-operation between humanitarian agencies.
Lanzer stressed the UN keenness to work in a constructive and co-operative way with the countries and organisations involved in development programmes to achieve stability in the Sahel countries.
Lanzer expressed his thanks and appreciation to the Qatari humanitarian organisations for their goodwill for co-operation and co-ordination and wished them success in achieving the targeted outcomes for their projects in Africa’s Sahel region.
