Lawmaker’s son charged with double murder

A Dhaka court yesterday framed charges against Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of ruling Awami League member of parliament (MP) Pinu Khan, following an order, in a case filed over shooting two persons to death in the city’s Eskaton area in April last year.
The court of second additional metropolitan sessions judge, Dhaka Shamsun Nahar framed the charges and fixed April 11 for recording deposition of the witnesses.
The court also rejected a petition of Rony’s counsel Kazi Mohammad Nazibullah for discharging him from the case.
Additional Public Prosecutor SM Jahid Sarkar read out the charges to Rony who pleaded not guilty and demanded justice.
Rony’s counsel Kazi Mohammad Nazibullah said they would move the High Court against the order.
On February 28, the court after hearing two sides fixed March 6 for passing an order whether to frame charge against Rony or discharge him.
Earlier on February 2, the court deferred, for the fourth time, the charge framing hearing against Rony over illness of the accused.
On August 13 last year, a Dhaka court accepted charges against Bakhtiar Alam Rony, in the case.
Detective Branch (DB) of Police pressed charges against Rony for the double murder on July 21, 2015.
On April 13, Rony, said to be in an intoxicated state, allegedly opened fire on people indiscriminately near Janakantha Bhaban in New Eskaton area from his car, leaving two people-rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and Janakantha’s auto-rickshaw driver Yakub-injured with bullets.
Hakim succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on April 15 while Yeakub died at the hospital on April 23.
On April 15 last year, a case was filed with Ramna Police Station against unidentified people in this connection.
Later law enforcers arrested Rony from his Dhanmondi residence in connection with the firing on June 1 last year.
