AMU Alumni Association (AMUAAQ) and World Bihar Association Qatar hosted a reception in honour of Professor Talat Ahmed, Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi; Kamal Akhter, Minister of Food Supplies in Uttar Pradesh; and Kunwar Danish Ali, Secretary General of Janta Dal (S) at Grand Qatar Palace Hotel recently.
Aqueel Ahmed was the host of the programme. The programme commenced with the recitation of the Holy Qur’an by Faraz Alam. Habibun Nabi, the Chief Patron of AMUAAQ, welcomed all the guests and different association members.
The programme was organised under the president-ship of MS Bukhari, the Managing Director of Satco International and Chairman of AMUAAQ. Many dignitaries were present in the hall, including Ali Akabr al-Farabi, Area Manager Qatar Airways; Sarfaraz Khan, Chairman of World Bihar Association; Shahabuddinm, President of Sadaf; Najmul Hassan, President of Jamia Milya Islamia University; President of KMCA; Deputy Chief Patron of Bazme-Urdu Qatar; and Simon Dsouza, President of Goan Welfare Association.
Chief guest Professor Talat Ahmed addressed the audience. He praised Qatar’s efforts to promote education globally. He talked about the present facilities available in Jamia Millia Islamia.
Talat Ahmad took charge as Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi on May 15, 2014. He had earlier taken over as Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir from Professor Riyaz Punjabi on June 1, 2011. Prior to this, he was teaching Geology at the University of Delhi.
Ahmad was formally appointed as the 14th Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia on April 29, 2014 by President Pranab Mukherjee in his capacity as Visitor of the Central University. He took charge from Professor SM Sajid who had been serving as officiating Vice-Chancellor since July 2013.
Talat Ahmad did his schooling from Giridih Higher Secondary School. In 1977, he joined Aligarh Muslim University to pursue MSc in Geology. He completed M Phil in Ore Petrology from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1980 and in 1985, he completed his PhD in Igneous Petrology from JNU.
He did a Post Doctoral Fellowship with University of Leicester during 1988–89 under a Government of India Fellowship and another from University of Cambridge under Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) during 1997–98.
In 1999–2000, he did another Post Doctoral Fellowship under Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) with Nagoya University, Japan.
Kamal Akhther, the minister from the government of UP, praised the role being played by AMUAAQ and WBO in promoting the name of India.
Kunwar Danish Ali, the Secretary General of Janta Dal (S), talked about the situation in India and opined that the democracy in India is maturing. He emphasized the importance of education in life. “Prosperity can be achieved in any community by spreading education,” said Danish.
Chairman MS Bukhari highlighted the importance of education and also spoke of supporting any cause related to education. He announced a few running trophies to support Urdu and also assured the Vice Chancellor of scholarships for deserving students.
