With one Chicago Bulls’ mark out of the way, the Golden State Warriors have their sights set on a bigger one. Stephen Curry had 41 points with 13 rebounds, and the Warriors notched their NBA-record 45th consecutive home victory, 119-113 over the Orlando Magic on Monday.
“This is special to protect your home court for 45 home games in the regular-season because it’s never been done before,” said Curry, who knocked his record 300th 3-pointer of the season. “Every night it’s not pretty but we’ve been able to get it done. Our fans are special. It’s a special place to play, for sure.”
The defending NBA Champions, who have not lost at Oracle Arena since January 27, 2015, moved to 26-0 this season, snapping a tie with the Michael Jordan-led Bulls of 1995-96.
Next up for the Warriors is the chase for the Bulls’ all-time record of 72-10. “That record is still within reach we’re going to play for it,” Curry said. “If we get that it would be very memorable.”
Klay Thompson added 27 points for the Warriors (56-6), who bounced back from Sunday’s 112-95 road loss to the lowly LA Lakers despite a season-high 24 turnovers. Golden State built a 19-point cushion and appeared to be coasting into the record books but got sloppy. The Magic took advantage and drew to within two on a layup and two free throws by Victor Oladipo with 1:13 left
The Warriors nearly turned the ball over again when Draymond Green bobbled a pass under the basket. But Thompson picked up the loose ball and buried a 3-pointer from the right corner to open up a 114-99 with 52.5 seconds left.
On the ensuing play, Andrew Bogut poked away a pass, leading to a Curry steal and easy layup. The reigning league MVP added three of four free throws to seal the historic win as the jubilant 19,596 fans roared their approval as blue and gold confetti spilled down from the rafters.
Afterward, an ailing Green (one point, nine rebounds and 10 assists), addressed the crowd at centre court: “Forty-five straight home wins is incredible. Without you all, this would not be possible.”
Aaron Gordon had 20 points and 16 rebounds to pace Orlando (27-35), which received 20 more from Brandon Jennings and Evan Fournier.
Memphis Grizzlies 106, Cleveland Cavaliers 103
Tony Allen scored a season-high 26 points to lead a well-balanced attack, and the short-handed Grizzlies upset the host Cavaliers when Kyrie Irving missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The Grizzlies (38-25) won for the eighth time in the last 11 games despite being without injured starters Zach Randolph, Spaniard Marc Gasol, Mike Conley and Matt Barnes along with reserve Chris Andersen. LeBron James scored 28 points and Irving had 14 of his 27 in the final frame for the Cavaliers (44-18)) who committed a season-high 25 turnovers, resulting in 30 Grizzlies points.
Indiana Pacers 99, San Antonio Spurs 91
Monta Ellis poured in 26 points, Paul George added 23, including a three-point play with 15.7 seconds left, and the Pacers (34-30) stopped the Spurs’ eight-game winning streak after nearly blowing a 16-point fourth quarter cushion. LaMarcus Aldridge had 23 points with 12 rebounds, and Kawhi Leonard also netted 23 for the visiting Spurs (50-10), who shot a season-low 35.4 per cent from the floor.
Chicago Bulls 100, Milwaukee Bucks 90
Derrick Rose scored 22 points, Spaniard Pau Gasol had his ninth career triple-double with 12 points, 17 rebounds, 13 assists, and the Bulls (32-30) - playing without All-Star Jimmy Butler (knee soreness) - beat the visiting Bucks. Jerryd Bayless topped the Bucks (26-38) with 20 points.
LA Clippers 109, Dallas Mavericks 90
Chris Paul scored 18 of his 27 points in a decisive 33-16 third quarter, DeAndre Jordan added 23 with 20 rebounds, and the visiting Clippers (41-21) sailed past the Mavericks. German star Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas (33-31) with 22 points.
Charlotte Hornets 108, Minnesota Timberwolves 103
Kemba Walker erupted for 21 of his 34 points in the third quarter, carrying the Hornets (34-28) to their fourth straight win after trimming the visiting Timberwolves. Minnesota (20-44) was paced by Karl-Anthony Towns’ 28 points and 14 rebounds.
New Orleans Pelicans 115, Sacramento Kings 112
Anthony Davis had 31 points with 10 rebounds, and the Pelicans (24-38) stormed from 17 down in the second half to beat the Kings. DeMarcus Cousins wasted a 40-point, 16-rebound effort for Sacramento (25-37), which led by 10 midway through the fourth frame.
