Former Qatar Stars League champions Al Gharafa and Al Ahli posted convincing wins as round 22 of the season came to an end yesterday evening.
Al Gharafa crushed Al Sailiya 4-0 at Thani Bin Jassim Stadium where the hosts looked in little trouble as they registered their eighth win of the season. Earlier, hosts Al Ahli picked up key points with a slick 4-2 win against Umm Salal.
For Al Gharafa, Thamer Jamal kicked off the proceedings by scoring the opening goal with a smartly placed header in the 11th minute.
Substitute Adel Ahmad then found the net in the 62nd minute as Gharafa consolidated. An own goal by Dragos Grigore in the 68th minute added to Al Sailiya’s woes, while Hungarian striker Krisztian Nemeth completed the rout with a fourth goal in the 72nd minute.
Al Gharafa are currently placed in 8th in the QSL standings with a tally of 30 points from 22 matches. It was Al Gharafa’s second win in their last four fixtures. Seventh-placed Al Sailiya has 31 points from 22 matches. For Al Sailiya, it was their first loss in the last three matches.
Earlier, two goals each brace by captain Mashael Abdulla (77 and 95) and Mouhssine Iajour (27 and 56) saw Al Ahli pick up three points against Umm Salal at Al Ahli Stadium. The win helps Ahli pull away from the QSL relegation zone.
A brace from Umm Salal striker, Abdulqadir Ilyas was too little too late for the Orange Fortress who registered their first defeat in six QSL matches. Ilyas scored in the 23rd minute in what was the first goal of the hard-fought clash. Ilyas also grabbed his second in the 80th minute to reduce Al Ahli’s lead.
For sixth-placed Umm Salal, it was their third straight match without a win. Umm Salal, coached by Bülent Uygun, have a tally of 32 points from 22 matches. Al Ahli, placed 10th, have 25 points from 22 matches.
