Ronald Rembert and Charles Abouo combined for a whopping 64 points as Al Khor bounced back from a seemingly hopeless position to score an 84-77 win over Qatar Sports Club in the Qatar Cup basketball tournament at the Gharafa Club yesterday.
Qatar Sports Club were quick off the mark, leading 23-13 after the first period and maintained their ascendancy even during the second quarter after which they appeared cruising comfortably towards victory with a 40-30 cushion.
But Al Khor were not done yet as they produced a sensational third period during which they scorched the court with 32 points, while restricting Qatar Sports Club to just 18.
That gave them a slender 62-58 advantage going into the final session, but that was all the encouragement they needed as they poured in 22 more points to clinch a deserving win.
Rembert was the top scorer for either side with 38 points, which included 12 from three-pointers, while Abouo chipped in with 26, nine of which came from the three-point mark. Abouo also had six assists and three steals.
Alen Hadzibegovic also contributed 13 points for the winners, while none of the others could manage double figures.
For Qatar sports Club, Anthony White excelled with 34 points, while Consteveous Jefferson had 24 and Abdulrahman Muftah 14.
Al Khor scored 26 points from turnovers while Qatar Sports Club had just nine.
In the second match of the day, El Jaish held their nerve to post an 81-77 win over Al Arabi.
In a close match, El Jaish just about managed to stay in front throughout the match and never cracked under pressure.
Ernest Bell top-scored for the winners with 19 points, while Yousuf Mohamed and Leon Macklin had 18 each.
El Jaish led 23-20 after the first quarter, 45-42 after the second and 63-61 after the third. Remarkably, despite enjoying only a slender lead throughout, the lead never changed even once during the match.
Oumar Seck and Narcellius Soyebo scored 20 points apiece for Al arabi, while Mohamed Matalaqh and Moutasim Hamed chipped in with 16 and 14, respectively.
On Tuesday, Al Khor play Al Shamal at 5pm followed by a match between El Jaish and Al Wakrah at 7pm.
